State of Mississippi -vs- T'kia Bevily
T’kia Bevily was convicted in the homicide of her fourteen-month-old stepdaughter, Jurayah Smith, in January of 2021. Bevily was granted a new trial in September 2021, after it was discovered, post trial, that one of the jurors had a familial relationship with the victim. The case has drawn national attention.
T’kia Bevily’s family and friends started a support group, which has landed them in the middle of a criminal contempt investigation, after it was learned that her brother, Christopher Smith, launched an advertising campaign asserting his sister’s innocence in the county where the jury resides. The trial has been moved from Claiborne County to Monroe County due to pretrial publicity in such a small rural community.
