Sgt. First Class Jesse Greenhill of the U.S. Army met with Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee on Friday, June 14th to mark the U.S. Army’s 249th birthday. Mayor Magee presented Greenhill with a proclamation in recognition of the event.

“Thank you for your support,” Greenhill said. “The people of Laurel and Jones County are our future leaders and the Army thanks you for your support!”

Mayor Magee stated that the city is honored to participate. “We are grateful to be a part of it,” he said.

The proclamation read as follows:

Whereas, the U.S. Army has proudly defended this nation’s interests for 249 years; and

Whereas, citizens of Laurel have fought bravely in and supported all of the nation’s wars from the Revolutionary War to current worldwide deployments, and continue to make this state proud by also serving in peacekeeping missions around the world; and

Whereas, the Regular Army, U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard have all provided many Laurel citizens with vocational and educational opportunities, as well as valuable life lessons in courage, discipline, and teamwork; and

Whereas, today’s Army still offers Laurel citizens, from all walks of life an opportunity to serve their state and nation proudly while bettering themselves and their families,

Now, therefore, I, Johnny Magee, Mayor, City of Laurel, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2024, as U.S. Army Day in Commemoration of The Army’s 249th Birthday in Laurel, Mississippi, and urge all citizens to join me in this worthy observance.

In witness whereof, I have here unto set my hand and caused the official seal of the City of Laurel, Mississippi to be affixed on this 14th day of June, 2024.
