Know Your Rights

When you or someone you love is in the hospital, being close matters. Whether it’s your spouse, parent, child, or dear friend, having the ability to visit often — early in the morning, late at night, or just for a moment during the day — can be comforting for both you and the patient.  That closeness makes a difference, not just emotionally, but in the overall care experience.

But sometimes, a transfer to another hospital that may be an hour or more away is required and being nearby goes away. Before you assume that transfer is your only option, it’s important to know: you have a voice in that decision.

And it’s not just adults who benefit. When newborns need specialized care, like a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), many families may feel they have to travel to a large city to get the best treatment. But in many situations, that high level of care is available much closer to home — even right here in South Mississippi. For new parents already facing the stress of a medical emergency, being able to stay nearby can ease
