HATTIESBURG — Amid a recent uptick in auto thefts, Hattiesburg police are urging residents to take basic precautions to secure their vehicles.
Investigators say most of the reported thefts involved vehicles that were left running and unattended, or unlocked with the keys inside.
“These incidents are largely preventable,” police said in a statement. “Thieves are looking for easy targets, and leaving a car running — even briefly — can make it one.”
The Hattiesburg Police Department recommends the following steps to reduce the risk of theft:
-
Turn off your vehicle and take the keys with you, even if you’re stepping away for just a moment.
-
Lock all doors and close windows before leaving the vehicle.
-
Remove or hide valuables to avoid drawing attention.
Police said taking these simple steps can help prevent crime and keep neighborhoods safer.
Anyone who sees suspicious activity or has information related to recent thefts is asked to call the Hattiesburg Police Department at 601-544-7900, or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers by calling or texting TIPS or visiting www.P3Tips.com.
