Staycation Spring Break

It will soon be Spring Break for parents with school-age children and college students. For new graduates who have started a new job, no spring break will be a rude awakening. For everybody else, it will be just another Monday. After spring break, it won’t be long until summer arrives and with that vacation time for a lot of families. However, with most South Mississippi school calendars, families can, for the most part vacation during the two-week breaks found every nine weeks or so throughout the school year.

Vacation time brings thoughts of the beach or the mountains, Disney, or maybe some exotic locale. But with costs continuing to rise, vacation may not be as easy to work into the budget as it once was. However, there is always a way to vacation… while staying pretty close to your own backyard. It may not be your first and most desired choice, but Mississippi is home to many hidden gems. I hear the groans and grumbles of “that’s not a vacation!” But I bet a visit to any of these locations will change your mind!

How many of you have actually visited the many opportunities around you…some which are practically right under your nose? Create your own adventure, whether you visit one location or all of them!

Red Bluff

Often called the Little Grand Canyon, Red Bluff, located in Marion County, offers breathtaking views and a unique landscape. A hidden gem and a geologist’s dream, this site is relatively unknown or was until hikers made it a popular spot for a day trip. Vibrant red and orange cliffs provide an interesting site for hikers and an incredible canvas for photographers. Red Bluff, which reveals layers of soil and rock, was shaped by erosion from the Pearl River. You can still follow the river through the forest.

Red Bluff stands 400 feet above sea level and creates some unforgettable views. It is regarded as a challenging hiking trail and has some exceedingly steep sections. Visitors can hike along one of several trails. You’ll find a nearly one-mile moderately challenging loop trail that takes an average of 30 minutes to complete. Be sure to pack water, snacks, and your phone/camera. Wear appropriate shoes – sturdy, but comfortable, hiking shoes or boots. You are going to get dirty as the soil is red and notorious for staining, so don’t wear anything you don’t want
