A bill that will increase death benefits for first responders who die in the line of duty is headed to the desk of Gov. Tate Reeves.
Senate Bill 2487, if signed by the Republican governor, will up death benefits for first responders fallen in action from $100,000 to $250,000 while covering funeral expenses up to $15,000. It will also authorize a grant program for enhanced training and safety equipment for agencies across the state.
“Our first responders selflessly protect us not knowing if they’ll return home. They run to danger when others run away,” Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell wrote on X. “SB 2487 seeks to raise death benefits for line-of-duty deaths, assist [with] funeral expenses, and implement a grant program for statewide training and safety measures.”

This is the latest bill championed by Tindell to be passed by Mississippi lawmakers after legislation requiring driver’s education was approved earlier in the week.
