A new mayor has been elected in Aberdeen following Tuesday’s Democratic runoff.
With no Republican or independent candidates on the ticket, Dwight Stevens will take his place in city hall come January after defeating incumbent Charles Scott 783 votes to 691 votes.
Stevens, who moved to Aberdeen in 1981, is a local business owner, His company, Stevens Auction Company, specializes in dealing high-end antiques. He has also made a name for himself around the community with the restoration of downtown storefronts, homes, and preserving historic places with his nonprofit called “Save Aberdeen Landmarks.”
“The people of Aberdeen have a new mayor, Dwight Stevens, and we are blessed for it,” Stevens’ campaign manager, Neil Palmer, wrote on Facebook after the results came in. “I don’t say this just because I happen to have served as his campaign manager and he won, but because I know the type of man he is. Few people have the kind heart and soul that he has.”
Residents also chose Quinnell Shumpert for another term as police chief. The Democratic incumbent defeated Christopher Dobbins 996 votes to 477 votes. No Republicans or independent candidates ran for the position.
