Roger Wicker picks up Trump endorsement amid re-election bid

Election season continues to ramp up in Mississippi and one federal leader has landed a major endorsement just under two weeks before the state holds its primaries.

Incumbent U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, in his pursuit to hold a third term, was touted by former President Donald Trump as the candidate GOP voters in Mississippi ought to cast a ballot for come March 12.

Despite the longtime Mississippi lawmaker being one of few Senate Republicans to vote in opposition to the former commander-in-chief’s February 2019 emergency declaration over the construction of a wall at the southern border of the U.S., Wicker has been able to remain in the good graces of Trump, who the Magnolia State chose to remain in the White House during the 2020 election cycle.

“Senator Roger Wicker is a fantastic Senator for the Great State of Mississippi. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Roger is working hard to Strengthen our Military, Defend our Country, and Support our Veterans,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Roger is a Champion of Conservative Values, who fights to Uphold the Constitution and Protect our Second Amendment. I was honored to receive Roger’s Endorsement last year, and Senator Roger Wicker has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election. Vote Trump and Wicker on March 12th!”

Wicker, a ranking member of the Senate’s armed forces committee, is championing his platform of cutting funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) requirements in the military, fighting to halt the use of tax dollars to fund abortions, and pushing for merit-based promotions in the military, not ones based on race or gender.

On the Republican side, Wicker is challenged by State Rep. Dan Eubanks and retired Marine Corps Col. Ghannon Burton. Former secretary of state candidate Ty Pinkins is running for the seat on the Democratic ticket.
