On the eve of Mississippi’s general election, former President Donald Trump is making a late push to help reelect GOP Gov. Tate Reeves.
The incumbent’s campaign announced on Monday that Trump will be hosting a “tele-rally” for Republicans across the state. Supporters will be able to dial (601) 568-7858 at 8:30 p.m. CT to hear Trump and Reeves speak live. The virtual event comes less than a week after Trump endorsed Reeves for the second election cycle in a row.
“Thank you to President Trump for this great endorsement. His work to make America great again led our nation to record economic growth, lower taxes, a stronger position on the world stage, and a safer country,” Reeves said after the Oct. 31 endorsement. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done to champion those same conservative policies and pro-America agenda in Mississippi.”
The main difference between this year’s endorsement from the once again presidential hopeful is that in 2019, Trump followed up by flying into Tupelo to host an in-person rally for Reeves. In recent elections such as Herschel Walker’s failed run for U.S. Senate, Trump has opted for rallies via telephone.
Reeves, amid a race that’s gotten closer than many expected, is being challenged by Democrat Brandon Presley. Presley, a longtime public service commissioner in north Mississippi, has largely based his campaign on cutting the country’s highest grocery tax, installing ethics reforms, and expanding Medicaid as Mississippi continues to face a hospital crisis.
The incumbent continues to focus on tangible successes the state has seen since he moved into the governor’s mansion, including income tax cuts, improved reading scores in schools, the lowest unemployment rate in history, and economic projects attracted.
