August means that summer break is winding down with the start of school, but the weekends are still action-packed around Mississippi. 

Here’s a look at what going on in Mississippi this August. Get out and enjoy the Magnolia State with the family.

Liverpool Legends: Beatles Experience – August 5th

Liverpool Legends promises a blast from the past with a night of music from the iconic 60’s rock band, The Beatles. These four actors and musicians were specially chosen by Louise Harrison, the sister of the late Beatles member George Harrison. Liverpool Legends: Beatles Experience will be at Hattiesburg’s Saenger Theatre Saturday, August 5th. Doors open at 6:30 pm, so plan to Come Together to Twist and Shout and Get Back to Yesterday for a musical experience you won’t soon forget. 

Mississippi Coast Annual Black Rodeo – August 5th

The Mississippi Coast Annual Black Rodeo showcases what African American cowboys and cowgirls can do. The rodeo is dubbed “The Baddest Show on Dirt” for a reason… these rodeo contestants are competing to move on to the Real Cowboy Association National Black Rodeo Finals. Saddle up for a night of barrel racing, team roping, steer wrestling, pony express, and more at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival – August 11th- 13th

The Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival is back again with its historic display of the legacy of blues and gospel in the region. With over 30 performances over the weekend, there’s something for everyone. The Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival runs from Friday, August 11th, to Sunday, August 13th. Mississippi Soul Food Festival – August 13th

The Mississippi Soul Food Festival includes the best soul food from Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas. From pork chops to oxtail, tacos to turkey legs, there’s a bite for every taste bud. Vendors from all over are ready to plate up something good at the Kandy Factory Events Center in Crystal Springs on Sunday, August 13th, from 12 pm-6 pm. Come hungry! Mississippi Book Festival – August 19th

Mississippi’s “Literary Lawn Party” is back for its 9th year of celebrating all things written word at the State Capitol. This party brings authors and readers from far and wide to the State Capitol’s rooms and nearby venues for panel discussions, book sales, giveaways, food, family fun, and more. The one-day event is Saturday, August 19th, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, visit msbookfestival.com.

Red Brick Roads Music and Arts Festival – August 25th- 26th

With a homebrew competition, vendors, music, arts, and more, The Red Brick Roads Music and Arts Festival in Clinton has something to round out a perfect Saturday for all ages. Adults can sample brews, kids can connect with their inner artists, and food vendors have every appetite covered. Plus, there is live music both days. This annual festival will be held Friday, August 25th, from 7 pm-8:15 pm and Saturday, August 26th, from 1 pm to 8:30 pm at Olde Town Clinton. For more information, visit redbrickroads.com
