Hurricane Update: Emergency City Meeting VIDEO SHARE to get the word out. Let’s stay safe.

Hurricane Isaac Hattiesburg MississippiThe Hattiesburg City Council had an emergency meeting today which included a briefing from the city’s emergency planner. The primary emergency evacuation shelter is the Forrest County multi-purpose center. Southbound lanes north of the Mississippi state lines will remain southbound. This will prevent a massive flood of traffic into the Hub City. The emergency management director stated,”We are going to have significant power outages and 10 inches of rain.” He commented that the outages will be “no where near Katrina outages.” He also said winds would be 50-60 miles per hour.

City sanitation is scheduled to operate on schedule. However, recycling will be altered as follows- Wednesday recycling will be picked up on Thursday, Thursday recycling will be picked up on Friday, and Friday recycling will be picked up on Saturday.  In an effort to provide faster non-emergent assistance, we are working directly with our Ward 4 neighborhood association partners on the ground. If you or a neighbor need help resolving a non-emergent situation contact your neighborhood representative listed below. You may also contact me directly.Remember that text messaging and emails are a more effective means of communication during weather events.

Laurel vs Hattiesburg High School Highlights

We covered the first half. We are just now starting to cover sports and had to split coverage between Hattiesburg and Oak Grove. We will grow our staff and make sure coverage improves. I had a blast at the game! The crowd was great and this team should have a fine shot at the state championships. I had a great time tailgating. Thanks Aaron!

Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association President Andrea Saffle Denies “Purposfully Excluding” Councilwoman Delgado from Meeting. READER POLL Do you think she was purposfully excluded?

Andrea Saffle Hattiesburg Deborah Delgado Hattiesburg
Andrea Saffle is confronted by Councilwoman Deborah Delgado. Delgado alleged she was “purposefully excluded” from the Hattiesburg Historic Neighborhood Association’s meeting.

Councilwoman Deborah Delgado accused president Andrea Saffle and the neighborhood association she lives in of  being, “exclusionary to me” and, “I was specifically excluded” she said. She wanted the record to reflect this.  Ms. Delgado said she had received a mailer about the meeting, and commented that she has very rarely been able to attend those meetings; but could attend this one.

The association was meeting to discuss neighborhood issues. The CPAC redistricting plan is endorsed by Delgado, the NAACP, and an African-American citizen group. The plan is opposed by many of the neighborhood associations in Ward 4.  Mrs. Saffle commented on Facebook, “No she was not banned. She was invited. But we said she was invited as a neighbor not as a city representative.”

Hattiesburg Highschool vs Laurel 1st Half Highlights

These are the the highlights from the first half of the game. We had to leave shortly before halftime; since we have limited staff. We didn’t miss much, since Hattiesburg totally whooped Laurel in the first half. I had a blast. The hospitality there is 2nd to none.

Hattiesburg High Defense led by Aikeem Coleman blanks Laurel as Tigers bring back “Little Brown Jug”

The Hattiesburg High defense proved to be superior Friday night at D.I. Patrick stadium The Tigers routed the Laurel Golden Tornados, as the Laurel offense was never able to get in rhythm; thanks to the Hattiesburg defense led by Akiem Coleman. Coleman, despite playing only one half, had five tackles and anchored the defensive line. Coleman flew all over the field in the first half causing chaos that goes far beyond the stat sheet.

Offensively the Tigers where led by Jammal Hatten who accounted for 4 total touchdowns with three rushing and one through the air. Hattiesburg High’s Tony Bridges returned the opening kickoff to the Laurel 14 yard line. From their Hatten rushed the ball into the endzone for a Tiger touchdown making it 7-0.

After the kick off, Tiger safety Emory Ireland intercepted a pass from Laurel quarterback James Crosby. After a quick three and out, Hattiesburg settled for a 35 yard field goal from kicker Even Watson, putting the Tigers up 10-0. At that point it felt as if it were 100-0, as the Tigers seem to take all hope away from Laurel.

The Tigers quickly scored from there on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Aubrey Bourne, ringing up the scoreboard to 17 and 0. At this point the outcome was to be inevitable. For good measure the Tiger offense tacked on three more touchdowns making the score 38-0 at halftime, which is all they needed to seal the victory and was the final score.

The Tigers (2-0) have little time to celebrate as they return to the field next week traveling to Warren Central (1-1).

Hattiesburg Patriot interviews Steven Palazzo

First I would like to thank Representative Palazzo for giving me the time today.  It is not every day that a small news site like mine gets camera time from an elected representative of Representative Palazzo’s stature.  I sincerely appreciate the consideration. It means a lot to me and our subscribers.

One question I asked him was something that came up in the Hattiesburg city council meeting and the Forrest County board of supervisors bu concerned citizens. Can something be done to keep WHLT in the Hattiesburg market. Another issues that was brought to my attention by military members was the Obama administration is discontinuing registration of Vietnam vets into the Agent Orange cancer program.  Lastly I wanted to know if he thought President Obama understood the dire consequences of the deficits and debt exceeding our gross domestic product. The video is below.
